Moscato Funk guitar

Overview of this Moscato Funk

Here is an unusual job. A splendid Moscato Funk.

It is a guitar from the workshop of luthier Jean-Luc Moscato. The problem: the fingerboard was lifting between frets 5 and 7 on the treble side…

As a result, the guitar was no longer playable.

I was lucky to be dealing with a guitar from a French craft workshop, so I picked up the phone and called Jean-Luc for his take and details on how this neck was built. Always useful before lifting the fingerboard to look underneath… I suspected the truss rod. Especially since it was seized…

After talking with Jean-Luc, who shared my analysis, we concluded it was most likely a truss-rod issue.

Work completed

Lifting the fingerboard: with steam. Long, messy work…

As you can see in the photos, the truss rod had rusted!! Never seen that before.
Result: not only was it seized, it had swollen and lifted the fingerboard. QED!

A big session cleaning the channel, ordering a new truss rod, adapting the ends of the channel to the new rod (not an exact match).

Then everything goes back together: cover the channel with a wood veneer as originally built, and re-glue the fingerboard.

Once the neck was restored and back on the body, it was time for a full service: cleaning, electronics check, hardware check, tuners check, fret leveling check (especially after that intervention!), fingerboard hydration, fret polish, restringing, and setup.

And then – time to play-test 🙂

Conclusion

That superb look is not just for show! It is a fantastic guitar. The neck is fast and very precise. The tones vary a lot depending on the pickups. It is versatile – and it still has its own character!!

A fantastic guitar!
