Ovation Adamas Guitar
The Esprit Guitare lutherie workshop received a visit from a Ovation Adamas, in a catastrophic state…
Overview of this Ovation Adamas
So, several important things about these wood/fiberglass hybrid guitars…
First of all, you must understand that wood is a living material. It works, it moves, depending on the temperature and humidity. Fiber is plastic… It hardly changes once it’s created… So mixing the two is an interesting idea but it imposes constraints on the wood.
Then, in Martinique it is hot and humid. Some glues don’t like this and end up not sticking at all.
That’s what happened with this guitar. The table ended up peeling off, along with some of the decorative veneers.
Work completed
The most important thing was obviously to glue the table back together. A technical exercise that is a bit time-consuming but not fundamentally complicated. The plating was a little more complicated.
Finally, a classic general repair session: cleaning, polishing, hydrating and maintaining the fingerboard, polishing the frets, checking the electronics and tuners, fitting new strings and tuning. Here again, it takes a little time, until everything finds its right place after tensioning the handle.
Conclusion
It’s clearly not my favorite style of guitar from a looks point of view, but I recognize that these are guitars that sound great and are very pleasant to play!! 😉
