Overview of this MTD bass

A new comeback to the Esprit Guitare violin workshop: this MTD bass (Michael Tobias Design) has already been here. Here she is back with a broken head wing… and a good overhaul to do.

Work completed

We therefore start by regluing the broken headstock piece (after dismantling the adjacent key). Fortunately, no loss of material at this level. This means that the regluing will be effective and solid, without having to recut missing pieces. Let the glue dry well before moving on.

Then it’s a big cleanup. It’s a bass that gets a lot of use and it shows! 😉 Dismantling and polishing the bridge, polishing the frets at the same time. Cleaning and polishing the body, cleaning, hydrating and maintaining the fingerboard. Check of the mechanics (the key which had been dismantled for reassembly was reassembled, of course), check of the screws and check of the electronics.

We can install new strings! And we begin the adjustment: curvature of the neck by playing on the truss rod and adjustment of the saddles for action and intonation.

The owner of this beautiful Tobias was favorably impressed by the setting I made on my LTD. So I made the same kind of adjustment to it: right on the edge. 😉

Conclusion

What can I say… She’s a Tobias, already. She is splendid, even if she has lived a little. But that gives it a character that lesser quality instruments don’t have since they are played less often.

The handle is fast, well balanced, easily readable. The sound is warm and snappy, the electronics are very effective. This is a great bass!! And it perfectly serves the music of its owner of whom I am a fan! 😉
