Esprit Guitare

Rickenbacker bass

Overview of this Rickenbacker type bass

This splendid Rickenbacker type bass went for an upgrade at the Esprit Guitare workshop.
It is a bass made by an amateur luthier based on the model of a Rickenbacker 5 strings.
The sculptures on the table are sumptuous.
However, it has some flaws. The action is super high and makes it difficult to play. Unfortunately, the handle is already very flat and the saddles are already at their lowest. And what’s more, the owner finds the ropes too close together. He would like them to be a little further apart.
Then, the mechanics are corroded and the electronics flicker.
We’re off to some big work!

Work completed

We start by replacing the tuners with more modern models, in black.
Then, to resolve the problem of string height (action) and string spacing, the only solution was to replace the bridge. I opted for a “3D” easel. It is a Schaller bridge which is very flat and allows each string to be adjusted in all dimensions. It’s great.
Then, we review the electronics a little, we change the buttons (to put black), we install straplocks in place of the old belt clips, and we can move on to the finishing:
Polishing of the frets, fret leveling, adjustment and testing 😉

Conclusion

A very interesting bass. Several challenges to overcome to make it a real playable instrument. And what’s more, she’s beautiful!
It doesn’t sound bad at all, despite entry-level microphones, and its configuration makes it very versatile.
Only downside: this magnificent red wood is very dense, and therefore very heavy!!
But there’s not much we can do about that…
